Modelling the helix

A cut-out 3D model of DNA

Summary
This three-dimensional model of B-DNA is assembled from parts cut out from card.

Educational objectives
Students will learn about the structure of DNA.

Pre-knowledge and skills required by students
Knowledge of the basic structure of DNA would be useful e.g., names of bases and base-pairing mechanism; sugar-phosphate backbone.

Time taken in lesson
90 minutes

Preparation time
10 minutes

Specialist equipment and materials required
DNA model templates printed on card, preferably in colour; drinking straws, thread or thin string.

Context where originally used
A similar model was originally published in 1958; this model has been used with 11-19 year-old students in the UK and elsewhere since 2001.

Additional information
This model has been published in Bioscience Explained and the School Science Review.
