Summary This three-dimensional model of B-DNA is assembled from parts cut out from card.
Educational objectives Students will learn about the structure of DNA.
Pre-knowledge and skills required by students Knowledge of the basic structure of DNA would be useful e.g., names of bases and base-pairing mechanism; sugar-phosphate backbone.
Time taken in lesson 90 minutes
Preparation time 10 minutes
Specialist equipment and materials required DNA model templates printed on card, preferably in colour; drinking straws, thread or thin string.
Context where originally used A similar model was originally published in 1958; this model has been used with 11-19 year-old students in the UK and elsewhere since 2001.
